|Revs 2, Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) 1
Andy Dorman and Taylor Twellman hit for early goals to send the Revs to the semifinals for the first time since 2001.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Behind first half goals from Andy Dorman and Taylor Twellman, the New England Revolution advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for the first time since 2001. The Revs earned a 2-1 victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium.
The Revs moved on to the semifinals, where they will face the Carolina RailHawks of the United Soccer Leagues First Division on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. That game will be played at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Conn.
Dorman struck early - in the fourth minute - blasting a shot from near the edge of the penalty area past Harrisburg goalkeeper Matt Nelson for the 1-0 lead. Steve Ralston’s corner kick service came all the way out to the other side of the box where Jeff Larentowicz chested the ball down to Shalrie Joseph in the center. Joseph then laid the ball off for Dorman, who ran on for the shot that snuck between defenders and found the crease between the left post and Nelson.
New England appeared to add to its lead in the eighth minute when Twellman slotted home a Joseph pass from the wing, but Twellman was judged to have come from an offside position and the goal was nullified. However, on his next chance, Twellman made no mistake when he increased the Revs’ lead to two goals, settling a Pat Noonan pass before ripping a shot past Nelson for the goal in the 17th minute.
The Revolution took the 2-0 lead late into the second half, but the City Islanders’ Matt Tanzini curled a 34-yard free kick into the upper right corner of the goal past Matt Reis to cut the Revs lead to one goal.
New England made the lead stick in the final minutes, and earned a momentum boost after tempers flared in the closing minutes of the game. Harrisburg’s Anthony Calvano had a dangerous foul on Reis as he was making a leaping save. The Revs took exception to the hard contact and both teams converged at the goalmouth. When the teams were separated, Calvano was shown his second yellow card of the game and ejected, allowing the Revs to play up a man for the final minute and stoppage time.
The Revs close out their four-game homestand when they host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday, Aug. 12, in a sold-out contest at Gillette Stadium. TV38 will televise the game live, while the WEEI Radio Network will also carry the game.
